Amphetamines are the most common example, but some other
banned stimulants are caffeine, cocaine, ephedrine, fencamfamine,
phenylpropanolamine, phentermine, pseudoephedrine andrelated
substances. Some of these can even be found in over-the-counter
cold medications, which mustbe avoided by athletes.
Narcotics analgesics
These are basically painkillers. They include substances like
methadone,
morphine, dextropropoxyphene, and pethidine. Codeine is not
banned.
Anabolic steroids
Some examples are boldenone, testosterone, mesterolone,
nandrolone, stanozolol, clostebol, clenbuterol, terbutaline,
salbutamol, fenoterol, salmeterol, and related substances.
Diuretics
These drugs help the kidneys remove fluids from the body. They
can be used by an athlete who wants to lose weight quickly. Some
athletes believe that they can cause the body to pass so much
urine so quickly that it will make it more difficult to detect
other illegal drugs.
Blood doping
Erythropoetin is a hormone secreted by the kidneys that acts
on the bone marrow to stimulate production of red blood cells. In
an effort to enhance the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood,
some athletes will inject erythropoetin. Detecting an illegal use
of this naturally occurring human hormone poses a particular
analytical challenge.
Beta blockers
These are used to slow down the heart rate and lower blood
pressure. They may be taken in an attempt to steady nerves. Some
examples include acebutalol, atenolol, oxprenolol, propranolol,
and related substances.
Alcohol
These drugs are used do dull pains and strains, However use of
Alcohol has some side effects. Impaired hand-eye coordination and
hand steadiness, increased complex reaction time , impaired visual
search and tracking , impaired transfer from immediate recall to
long-term storage, prolonged glare recovery , contraction of
visual field (tunnel vision), difficulty in processing
information, impaired performance of multiple tasks.
Cannabis (marijuana, hashish)
Cannabis is used primarly the same reasons as the Alcohol, But
cannabis produces a more rapid effect than alcohol. Cannabis's
side effects are poor immediate recall, prolonged glare recovery,
visual distortion, distorted perception of time and space,
possibility of hallucinations, poor performance of complex tasks,
poor tracking ability , impaired hand steadiness , increased
complex reaction time , apathy and lethargy.
Cocaine
Though the coca leaf, and its extract cocain hydrochloride,
have been used for more than four thousand years, abuse in North
America is relatively recent. The use of cocaine has, in the past
decade, spread to other white collar, blue collar and student
populations. The principal danger with cocaine is that its effects
are intense but of short duration; over time, use becomes very
frequent and psychological dependency extreme. It's side effects
follows. Exaggerated feeling of competency and power, hyper
vigilance, \excitability, poor judgement and decision-making
irritability, erratic, aggressive behavior ,impaired fine motor
dexterity, impaired ability to estimate time and distance.
