From the 2nd to the 12th of January, South Australia's newest Rover Crew was busy helping out and attending Mega 10. Danny attended the Venture as a Venturer and Assistant Leader, the sly bugger, whilst Anna, Angela and myself helped at the South East Biking Tour, by organising the entertainment for 100 Venturers.
The 3 of us drove down in Angela's Kombi on Friday afternoon and helped sort out heaps of bikes. The Venturers arrived on Saturday about three hours late!!! The first two days were bloody hot with the temperature at 38 degrees. This forced the Venturers to take the easy route to Glencoe. To cool the Venturers down, we set up and played with them Twister under sprinklers and had big water fights. We also sold out of drinks very quickly. The best entertainment came later, though. All afternoon you could notice the smoke from a nearby bushfire growing in intensity. Then we could see flames and townspeople started to congregate at their safe site which just happened to be the primary school where we were staying. The CFS got the blaze under control but it was decided we should relocate to to Millicent in case of a flare up. All the kids got away while Angela, Anna, and I helped Greg Roberts load up the truck with all the bikes. We eventually had tea at 11 p.m.
The next day it rained and rained so I went out on the gut busters tour. We had some very extreme downhill mountain biking with one of the Venturers coming off well and bending his handle bars and head stem. That night because of the rain the frat area was extremely popular. The movie had about 50 people watching and we were given a great opportunity to make friends with the Venturers.
The last day of riding was to Beachport. The hard route included a 3 km walk through sand dunes. The last night's entertainment was volleyball or basketball in the gym and a movie which started at 11 p.m. On the last morning when we were getting ready to say our goodbyes, a female Venturer broke her arm and we had to change the Kombi into an ambulance and rush her to Millicent. The remainder of the day was spent relaxing on the beach in Robe. We camped by the beach and I had a wicked surf while Anna had a shower for nearly an hour.
On the way back to Adelaide we decided to say a proper goodbye to all our new friends so we dropped in at Woodhouse and saw everyone in unit 172. This was a really good way for our new crew to promote itself and provide service to the Venturer Section.
