Join us in jumping off a cliff

The Scouter

Bored with life? Why not join the Explorers in a Rappelling outing on Saturday, April 12, 1997 (rain date on Sunday, April 13, 1997). Now
you may ask what is rappelling? The high adventure of rappelling is the thrill of jumping off a cliff and sliding down a rope.

For those of you who can't afford the time to travel to the Rockies, to perfect your skills at this sport, come join us. We will be traveling to
Camp Falling Rock north of Newark, Ohio (not New Jersey), and start our venture at 9:00 am-3:00pm. Believe it or not, the cost is a mere
$10.00.

So that you don't get stuck over the edge, please wear tight clothes and belts, and long hair must be up or tied back. Lunch, snacks and
drinks will be provided. Matt McGinnis may even lead some adventurous souls on another mountain bike tour!!! (Don't want to miss that!)
For more details on this event, please contact Jenny Horn, at 436-7200 or Bruce Smith, at 486-2095

The adventure of rappelling will be one you will talk about the rest of your life. Sign up early and remember you can bring a friend. Micro$oft

Problems with our Web Page

DJ Gregor

In February our web page grew from 1MB to 12MBs. This flurry of growth caused some unforeseen problems. The web server has a umask  of 077. When one un-cpios a file as a user [non-zero id] the inbound files' chmod settings are overwritten by the umask. Instead of taking on  the characteristics of the outbound file they are that of the umask. Hence, our directories and files that we updated became locked. We found  the solution of setting the umask before the cpio -i solved the problem:

SCO's offering of free UNIX?

Andy Phillips

www.sco.com. Free license, $20 if you need media. No downloads available. It is the single user, Desktop version of the operating system,  but it comes with tons of stuff. I believe it is the retail version, except for the license! I never have a problem on name brand equipment, but it  sometimes gives me fits on EISA clone machines with bad DMA or strange BIOS. You'll find the file structure a bit strange. It is SVR3, but  files are linked all over the place into different structures, like /etc/bootpd will actually be something like /var/K/version/blahblahblah/etc/bootpd. Maybe they're trying to make it conform to some standard or SVR4. More exciting for SVR4 oriented people though is that UnixWare will also be available soon for free. It is pretty much the definition of SVR4 and preferred by OEMs like Unisys and NCR. The X Windows environment is also more friendly than SCO's.

UNIX System Administration

James D. Corder

Intern $20,000.00s
Apprentice $30,000.00s
Jr. SA $40,000.00s
SA $50,000.00s
SA [MTS1] $60,000.00s
SA [Lead] $70,000.00s
SA [MTS] $80,000.00s
SA [DMTS] $90,000.00s
Sr. SA [DMTS] $100,000.00s
Sr. SA [GuRu] [DMTS] $250,000.00s
Sr. SA [Fellow] $Sky-'s-the-limit!
Sr. SA [Lead] [DMTS] $150,000.00s

What separates the SAs and above from the Jrs and bellow is the ability to manage a medium scale network [150+], the large scale [1,000+] to the giant [10,000+]... I think that anyone can see that the needs/skills of the SA are different between these networks. There are more complex problems on the larger networks. Moreover, smaller networks don't need the higher level of SAs...

You will find that companies which value the SA below the Programmer lump all of their SAs into the "SA" category and pay between $30-40,000 a year. They truly believe that the SA will want to grow up into a Programmer. I have found that most of the best UNIX System Administrator either where never a programmer or grew up into a SA.

The strong companies realize that the SA must be able to program so they can understand the needs of the programmer.

The 3 year old Nephew

"Billy what did you do?" "I pass Gas." "Why?" [a slight pause why he contemplated his answer] "Because that is what my family does."

Chief Logan's Exploring Lock-In

The Scouter

Attention all Explorers and friends. There will be a lock-in on Saturday, March 8, 1997 at the Chillicothe Swim & Racquet Club. The administration starts at 8:00 p.m. and the event will last until 8:00 a.m. the next morning. Cost will be $10.00 if you pre-pay at the scout office prior to March 1st, or $12.00 if you pay after March 1st or at the door March 8th. Post 38 and 48, who are sponsoring this event, predict it will be a lot of fun! This party is just something for all of the Explorers in this area to get better acquainted. Pizza will be ordered around
midnight and pop will be supplied. Activities will include: basketball (5 0 5 tournaments), racquetball, tennis, football, euchre tournaments, volleyball tournaments, and toilet papering adult chaperones that fall asleep. Bring a sleeping bag at your own risk! All equipment must be supplied by anyone attending this shin-dig. Chillicothe Swim & Racquet Club will not supply any rackets or balls unless rented by the individual. Keep in mind this is coed, and one should act accordingly. In case of road closures due to bad weather, listen to radio stations B94- Chillicothe; 96.7-Vinton and Jackson County, and 97.9 Columbus, for info on the Lock-in. It will be  escheduled. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact Josh Szarek at 775-4895. There is also a map attached for all of you naviguessors.

A joke I heard...

David Van Sandt

I got this joke from a friend... it's kinda cute.

There was an engineer, manager and programmer driving down a steep mountain road. The brakes failed and the car careened down the road
out of control. Half way down the driver managed to stop the car by running it against the embankment narrowing avoiding going over a cliff.
They all got out, shaken by their narrow escape from death, but otherwise unharmed.

The manager said "To fix this problem we need to organize a committee, have meetings, and through a process of continuous improvement,
develop a solution."

The engineer said "No that would take too long, and besides that method never worked before. I have my trusty pen knife here and will
take apart the brake system, isolate the problem and correct it."

The programmer said "I think your both wrong! I think we should all push the car back up the hill and see if it happens again."

Scouting CyberSpace Jamboree

James D. Corder

Scouting CyberSpace Jamboree 1 was held in Columbus Ohio March 27 1993. Scouting CyberSpace Jamboree 2 was in Columbus Ohio
1994. The World Scouting CyberSpace Jamboree WSCJ 1, Columbus, OH & Perth WA 1995

The CyberSpace Jamboree on CompuServe began as part of the first Scout Show in the new Simon Kenton Council [Columbus, Ohio USA] Some 15,000 Scouts and Scouters in the Ohio Valley where coming together to celebrate the future of Scouting and the "new" council... Several Older councils merged into one.

The theme for the Scout Show saw Scouting, the bridge to the future.

Truly we did not expect the response that we received: We set up a 30' x 70' booth with 12 PCs connected to CompuServe and Sun Sparc Stations with full Audio/Video Tele-Conferences. The CompuServe Explorer Post was so new that the DCSC Post had to assist in the operation of the First CyberSpace Jamboree. CompuServe's Post is strong now:-) Many Explorer Posts where in attendance: AT&T, Bettel's... It was an electronic flurry of Posts:-)

LCI had free long distance calls around the world to other Scouts. Sun MicroSystems had free video Conferences through the InterNet
AT&T showed UNIX... There where about 70 Explorer Posts there:-)

The event was GRAND...

The usage of CompuServe was to be just in the Outdoor Forum. However, it went bigger than that. When Scouts around the country heard what we where doing... They all started to join in. The line to use the CompuServe booth was several hours long...

The second CyberSpace Jamboree was planned to go national, it went global.

The third was the first we planned on going global... Therefore, we called it the 1st WSCJ. In fact we only made 137 patches... We thought that would be enough.

The WSCJ was held in two cities: Columbus Ohio and Perth WA. When Senator John Glenn heard that Scouts in Columbus, Ohio and the City of Lights Perth Australia he asked if he could join in. Of course the answer was yes:-)

We opened with Senator John Glenn, followed by the Governor of Ohio Followed by the Premier of WA:-) We where in over 150 cities  around the world. We know of 14 countries... It was bigger than we expected:-)

The Value of a Friend

James D. Corder

As many of you know, I just got back from a 24,000 mile round tip to Australia. While there I met a several people that I now call my friends.

Mia, went out of her way to make my stay there most enjoyable. Her hospitality showed no bounds. Mia, came to America this month. Her trip included Boston and Philly. A short excursion of a tad more than 1,000 miles and I was off to PA. Ok, $18.00 in Tolls, $38.00 in Gas, and about $20.00 in food.

Isn't a friend worth $76.00?

What astounded me was some of my associates that did not understand why I would make such a venture for "Just" dinner. I left at 8:00am to arrive 5:00pm, eat a meal, then left 10:00am to return in time to be at a meeting by 8:00pm. Ok, I understand from Mia that some of the chaps that I stayed with in Ausiland where taking bets to see if I would come or not. They asked Mia if she thought I would make the trip...

What hurt most was those that couldn't believe that I would drive for a day one-way to see a friend. I guess this translates that they could not find it in themselves to make the trip, for a friend. The fourth point of the BSA Scout Law is "Friendly!" I have found in my life that we do not get many "True" friends. Therefore, you must hold on to the ones that the Good Lord gives you!

Sometimes, you have to do what is right even when everyone else thinks you are insane. Mia is my friend, she traveled 24,000+ miles.

Wouldn't you spend $76.00 and two days of your life to see a friend?
