You mentioned your Post teaches UNIX for Programers through an Engineering Computer Information & Science course. We've got a group in our Post that would like to learn C and Unix. Unfortunately, these are two areas where our advisers don't have much background.
I was wondering if you have any course materials that you'd be willing to share with our kids? I'm guessing that it's probably quite a bit better than what we could put together on our own.
We're hoping to install Linux on a 486 PC as a means of giving them a Unix-like environment in which to learn. We'd then like to set up the machine for mail, Web browsing, ftp, etc. as a way for them to get acquainted with various Internet tools. Rather ambitious since none of us has ever done this before. But we're going to give it a shot!
Let me know if you're able to assist. By the way, haven't seen you for a while on ExplorerNet. Welcome back!

Hey, we may be interested in some sort of challenge as well, we've just started Computer Explorer Post 2000 here in Central California. In fact, we are having our first "real" meeting on Oct. 3rd. (YES, real new) We have decided to have several areas of (computer) emphasis.
Post UNIX Competitions
1. We are building computers for our local school district using old donated computers and printers,
2. We will build and maintain a homepage for our local council, our post, and the City of Lodi,
3. The Post members will take over the operation of the Starbase BBS and build a Scouting FTP site with it, and lastly, the post will publish an on-line and hard copy newsletter for the post and council. We have 6 associate advisors, and about 25 youth so far.... wish us luck!

On October 28th, Center Of Science & Industry [COSI] is their having a Halloween UnMasked party. Explorer Post 369 will be helping them move all of the displays before the party and after the party and help set up the grand event. This is a really cool event, and I had a lot of fun doing this last year. We will be meeting at the church at 4:00 and then going over to COSI. When we are done we will go back to the church, and play around with things. We will be going back to COSI around midnight to move everything back and we will be done sometime around 4:00am.

With my new management so engrossed in Micro Soft products I though it would be beneficial for me to learn Micro Software, such as Project. Therefore, I broke down and finally purchased an Intel based notebook.
Texas Instruments TravelMate 4000M IntelDX4/75MHz 4MB RAM/455MB HDD. Sound Blaster, SCSI Card, TCP/IP Card, Fax/Modem,...
Ok, the SCSI Card was the clincher. It would enable me to utilize the disk drives and CD ROM that I already own for my Sun Station.
The network card would give me the ability to connect the System into my Home Sun Network and utilize my 5GBs of disks remotely.
At work they gave me a Personal Computer for my desktop. Plugged me into the Token Ring, and launched me into the windows of despair. For the first time in my life I had to learn to utilize inadequate personal tools. The project software was one dimensional tool. It does not easily support multitiered, multi-staffed projects.
I quickly moved the system out of my office and into the vacant one across the hallway. I found it was faster to use pen and paper than that system. But I still had to turn in project plans to my supervisors. Hence I used my notebook.
One of the Company officers seeing my sparse computer facilities quickly placed a Sparc5 on my desktop. Now I utilize WABI to fulfill my project needs.
I have never been one to carry anything to and from work. The notebook is a pain. Therefore, I must admit, that tend to leave it at home.
The only good thing about this system is that one can purchase games right off the shelf for it. Hence why I call it a Game Boy. For the amount of money that I put into the hardware and software I could have purchased a Sparc5 for my home. Toss in the amount that I will have to pay for the 16MB SIMM chip and sell my SUNIPC and I could have a used Sparc 20...
Ok, I goofed.
There are so many people out there that swear about how grate DOS/Windows systems are I thought that I would give one a try. I guess that once you used the power of a UNIX System you will never settle for anything less.

October 6-8th--our Post will be having our campout at Camp Falling Rock. We will be leaving Friday evening and coming back Sunday afternoon. I would like to have a confirmation from everyone that I have not already talked to as whether or not they will be going.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone there. I'll let you know at the next meeting how much the food costs, and exactly when we are going to meet.
